Adaptive Apparel is going Mainstream!

Adaptive clothing, also known as adaptive apparel or clothing for people with disabilities, is designed to meet the unique needs and challenges of individuals with physical or developmental disabilities, limited mobility, or other medical conditions that may affect their ability to dress independently or comfortably in traditional clothing. A number of important factors go into the creation of adaptive apparel including ease of use, accessibility, anti-stripping, sensory consideration in fabrics and more.

Once largely considered a fringe, niche concept, adaptive clothing is now making its way into the mainstream through nonprofits and advocacy groups like Runway of Dreams partnering with brands like Tommy Hilfiger, JCPenney and Target to advance inclusion for the physically and developmentally disabled in mainstream fashion at big brand stores. Through the advocacy of nonprofits like this and our own, many companies and designers are now focusing on creating adaptive clothing lines to cater to the diverse needs of people with disabilities, recognizing the importance of providing them with functional, comfortable, and dignified clothing options. Additionally, advancements in fabric technology and design continue to drive innovation in this field, leading to more inclusive and practical clothing options for individuals with disabilities. NBC put together a great segment highlighting this advancement. Be sure to check it out here.
